Written by David Mitchell, 'Black Swan Green' is a novel following a year in Jason Taylor's life. There are thirteen chapters, which in turn follow a month of the year. Jason is introduced as a 13 year old boy, with a stammer. We see the change from Jason in the first chapter, to what he has become as a result of influence from certain events throughout the book. Another element we see in this, is how he struggles with his stammer (which he personifies as 'hangman'), and how he deals with it or seeks help about it.
Mitchell accurately uses realistic interaction between characters to portray Jason and most of the other characters, however at times there are a few characters which seem to be absolutely unbelievable. However, Jason is the only main character and majority of the other characters are recurring or only minor. Also, the book is quite episodic, as what happens between chapters is not described, nor even briefly mentioned, so we are left unknown with what happens to him between the chapters.

This image depicts how one is influence by others, through the actions and thoughts of others. Jason would be the red cogwheel, and the other white cogwheels would be controlling Jason, influencing him.
